Chapter 15

I must have fallen asleep at one point. The floor was hard and uncomfortable but exhaustion had won out and everyone in the bakery had fallen quiet.

The sound of whispering voices awoke me, and I sat up, rubbing my eyes. Everyone was asleep and the kitchen was dark and silent.

At first, I thought I’d only dreamed it, but then the sound of whispering drifted to me again and I frowned.

I stood and walked to the front of the bakery. I crept quietly, so I wouldn’t make a sound and alert whoever was talking. I couldn’t tell who was missing among the sleeping students in the kitchen, but when I got to the front of the bakery, Maggie’s silhouette was unmistakable, her curls haloed around her head. Next to her, a thinner, more angular shadow stood rigidly.

I leaned against the doorpost in the darkness, not moving, barely breathing so that they wouldn’t hear me.

“You don’t know what you’re doing, Simon,” Maggie said in a hushed voice. “You have no idea what you’re getting yourself into.

“I know what I’m doing,” Simon said, his voice determined, hands balled into fists.

“You really need to think this through.” Maggie’s tone was urgent.

“I know exactly what I’m doing, Maggie. I can handle it.”

Maggie shook her head. “You’re not handling it, you’re a nervous wreck. People are starting to notice. This… is a big deal. And there are consequences, you know. People talk and if you’re not careful, it will come out. Clara already saw you yesterday.”

“What?” Simon asked, panicked. “What did she see?”

“Not enough, lucky for you.”

Simon shook his head again, his voice betraying desperation. “I’m not afraid of talk. It was time for change, that’s all.”

Maggie leaned in closer. “But think about your timing, Simon. Right after… after everything that’s happened. It doesn’t look right. People will start asking questions, making connections that aren’t there. Or maybe they’ll find what is there, and what then? What will you do when you’re caught?”

Simon glanced toward the window where the storm still raged steadily on, a determination and fear in his eyes.

“I can’t stop now. What happened to Alex was unfortunate but I’ve been planning this for too long.”

Maggie’s voice held a somber forewarning when she spoke and she looked concerned.

“Every action has a price, Simon. Especially now.”

They turned toward me to head back to the kitchen and I stepped back quickly. I hurried to where I’d been lying on the floor and sat down. When I sat down, they both came into the kitchen. They didn’t seem to notice that I was awake, and Maggie and Simon returned to their own spots. Simon lay down and promptly went to sleep. Maggie lay down too, but she didn’t go to sleep just yet. Her eyes were still open—I could see that much in the darkness—and I looked away so she didn’t feel me looking at her.

My mind raced, trying to piece together fragments of their hushed conversation. How had Simon and Alex been connected? And why
